Shunting locomotives

The GA 1000 AS is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive designed and built by Vossloh Rail Vehicles in Valencia for the French state-owned railway company SNCF, which has placed orders for 160 units. The GA 1000 AS can be used for shunting operations in intermodal environments and sorting yards, as well as being perfectly suited to haul cargo trains. Equipped with the latest generation of components, the GA 1000 AS incorporates shunting locomotive technology developed and delivered by Vossloh over the last twenty years to customers all around the world: Renfe, Spain; SBB,Switzerland; Israel Railways, Egypt National Railways, etc.

Traction for the GA 1000 AS locomotive is provided by an 8-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine built by Caterpillar (model C3508), rated at 1,000 kW. Other driveline assemblies (alternator, rectifier, IGBT converter, traction motor) are furnished by Alstom. The 76-t locomotive (axle load 19 t) has a maximum speed of 100 km/h; if required the weight of the locomotive can be reduced to 74 t. The French version of the GA 1000 AS is equipped with the French safety system KVB. Other safety systems are available to match local and national requirements.

The locomotive has a 3,000-liter fuel tank. The diesel engine compartment is separate from the alternator assembly zone to ensure that all the electric parts are protected from airborne impurities generated by the diesel engine. In addition, there is a hood with wide covers on both sides to facilitate maintenance access.

Future models of the GA 1000 AS will be powered by new-generation Caterpillar engines (C 3508C) for compliance with the upcoming European emissions requirements (EU 97/68 Stage IIIA and B).
