EUROLIGHT - The new weight class

The EUROLIGHT is the new diesel-electric locomotive designed by Vossloh Rail Vehicles for market niches where low axle loads are a must and ample power is appreciated. Thanks to its reduced weight, the EUROLIGHT is able to run on secondary lines with less traffic than primary, allowing operators to save time and money by avoiding the constraints imposed by primary line operation.

A newcomer to Vossloh’s EURO family
Capitalizing on experience gained from the EURO family to date, Vossloh has come up with the new EUROLIGHT 4-axle diesel-electric AC-AC locomotive with reduced axle load and complying with the latest EU regulations and driver requirements. It features components and assemblies already installed in its EURO 3000 and 4000 cousins as well as new propulsion and traction components from such notable rail industry suppliers as ABB and Caterpillar.

Green and safe
The EUROLIGHT complies with all relevant environmental standards: UIC and EU stage IIIA and update to IIIB. It is also fully compliant with respect to crashworthiness and other safety requirements.

Best power-weight ratio
The platform design strategy adopted for the EUROLIGHT allows the operator a choice between two Caterpillar engines: CAT C175-16 (2,800 kW) and CAT C175-12 (2,300 kW). Thanks to Vossloh’s extensive experience in lightweight diesel locomotives, the new EUROLIGHT offers the best power-weight ratio: rated at 2,800 kW with an axle-load of less than 20 t.

Modular design
  • Passenger version: 140 km/h (up to 200 km/h optional)
  • Freight version: 120 km/h

Vossloh's integrated efficiency systems
To accompany its locomotives and LRVs, Vossloh Rail Vehicles has developed a series of tools that help operators to improve their overall operational efficiency as well as to reduce emissions. Vossloh's efficiency systems are part and parcel of the new EUROLIGHT.

EFITREN: we can only save what is measurable
The EFITREN system performs real-time measurements of locomotive energy consumption for initiating energy-saving options.

DAS: improving energy efficiency
Vossloh’s DAS assists the driver in maximizing energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

TTWC: expert system to improve operation
  • maintenance
  • driver assistance
  • wireless communications
  • locomotive GPS
