Vossloh sells locomotives in Norway

The climatic conditions of the Nordic countries are no longer a problem for the EURO 4000.

Vossloh España, who manufactures in the fabric of Albuixech (Valencia) Europe’s most powerful diesel-electric locomotive, the EURO 4000, has designed the version ‘Winterized’, which allows its use in extreme climatic conditions, such as temperatures up to 40ºC below zero.

The UK base Beacon Rail Leasing Limited, founded in December 2008, has ordered six locomotives for final operations by Cargonet. They will be delivered by Vossloh in the first quarter of 2010, which are additional to the two existing units in Sweden already acquired by the Swedish Railcare.

“These orders show how important flexibility is nowadays for the market. Thanks to our technology, I+D+I departments and long experience, in Vossloh we are capable of developing solutions oriented to the client and modify them rapidly”, comments Iñ¡go Parra, General Manager of Vossloh España.

The culture of Vossloh España involves not only designing high performance products and technology at competitive prices but, especially, give priority the security and the respect to the environment. The EURO 4000 is prepared to be equipped with the European security system ETCS, and fulfils the European norms about emissions of CO2, noise, security and fire protection. Additional equipments like a Snow Plug and a system of cleanliness of bearing surface, allows the locomotive to operate perfectly even at temperatures around 40 degrees bellow zero. The changes made to allow the locomotive to operate at low temperatures are also visible in the inner of the locomotive. In the drivers cabin, an independent air conditioning dispositive provides an optimal interior temperature.

Vossloh tries not only to develop locomotives having in consideration the different meteorological conditions, he also adapts the EURO 4000 to the different European regulation systems. This way, the high performance locomotive provided for the transport of passengers and freight is equally suited for national and cross border transport.

The bet Vossloh España did in his moment in seeking the market and technological innovation to design the EURO 4000 is being rewarded by the interest the rail operators are showing for this locomotive, of which have been requested more than 50 units for the service between Spain and Portugal; between France, Germany and Belgium; and now, for the service between Sweden and Norway.

2.000 kilometres without refuelling
The EURO 4000, of 120 tons of weight, can cover distances of up to 2,000 km without having to refuel thanks to its fuel-efficient electronic diesel injection, its high-duty traction system and ample tank capacity.

The EURO 4000 is powered by a turbocharged 16-cylinder two-stroke engine manufactured by the American company Electro-Motive Diesel Inc (EMD), which allows to develop power of 3200 kW (4300 CV) that permits the transport of very heavy freights and long distances with a top speed of 120 km/h for freight transport and 160 km/h for passenger transport.
