Vossloh España awarded by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca a contract for six Train-Trams on the Manacor–Artá line
- The first to operate at the beginning of 2011
- Vossloh will take charge of the maintenance for three years
Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM), a public company under the Consellería de Mobilitat del Govern de les Illes Balears, has awarded Vossloh España a contract to develop and build six Train-Trams for the Manacor–Artá line. The first of these units, to operate on interurban and urban services, will go into service early in 2011. Vossloh España, a company headquartered in Albuixech, Valencia, and specializing in the design and development of rolling stock, will also take charge of the maintenance of the trains for a period of three years, possibly extended by a maximum of another two.
Each of the Train-Trams (composed of motor-trailer-motor units) will run on the line between Manacor and Artá. The Train-Trams have a length of 37 meters, a width of 2.55 meters, capacity for 317 passengers and a top interurban speed of 100 km/h, throttled to 30 km/h in urban zones. In contrast to conventional suburban trains, the acceleration and deceleration of the Train-Tram is much faster and it will more readily negotiate tight-radius curves.
Prominent features of the Train-Tram are its ability to operate on existing infrastructure (both conventional suburban and tramway trackage), as well as its comfort and excellent accessibility (low floor and wide doors for wheelchairs). Both driver and passenger areas are air-conditioned. There is also space for bicycles.
The Train-Tram comes with state-of-the-art safety equipment plus eco-friendly brake energy recovery. It runs on elastic-suspension wheels for very low noise emission.
